What is a Dark Night of the Soul?

Life on Earth is full of polarities of light and dark and as we journey through we attempt to find some kind of balance and move toward the light and things that make us happy or fulfil us. When we hit a low point in our life spiritualist term this a ‘dark night of the soul’ which is a time in your life where you really feel like you’ve hit rock bottom. These experiences can be triggered by a loss of a loved one, trauma suffered or even a feeling of financial instability. When we hit the bottom we finally have something to push up off of and this is what can make these dark night experiences trigger a spiritual enlightenment.

In life we have a lot of freewill to express and make decisions that have led us to where we are now. Sometimes It can be hard to take responsibility for the freewill and decisions we made if we feel that we were placed in unfair situations and didn’t have much of a decision. Even in our darkest times we have choices to make and some of us give into our darkness and go through a period of feeling stuck and lost. Eventually we tire of not seeing the light and resolve ourself to find something to keep us moving, at this point many people turn to spirit or God for answers and support. Many people in their darkest times end up finding the light within themselves and a deeper connection with the inexplicable creator energies out there.

The only constant is change so we should not anticipate or strive to never experiencing a dark night of the soul in the future but we should rather focus on figuring out how to deal with our emotions and thoughts. So that when, inevitably, we find ourselves hitting rock bottom you have developed the coping mechanisms needed to work through it.

Some tips for working through a Dark Night of the Soul:

  1. Learn. Working with your mind is something that is totally in your control, find something that interests you and make an effort to learn more about it. This will give you a sense of grounding and a better connection with yourself or whatever it is you are trying to learn about. 2. Stimulate your senses. One way to slowly wake yourself from the darkness is through stimulating your senses like smell (burning some incense) or touch (giving yourself a massage)
  3. Survival. Pay more attention and effort in taking care of your basis needs like food, water and shelter. Supporting and nourishing the physical body can help the mental and spiritual body heal and wake up.
