Meditation is an exercise of practicing focus and when practiced consistently can have amazing benefits for your mental, emotional and even physical health. There are many different ways you can practice mindfulness through meditation and what is best suited for you will depend on your individual characteristics and needs. It may be your end goal to develop intense focus, concentration and stillness to quieten and have better control of the mind and our thoughts. It is important to hold yourself to the standard of someone who is learning something and not someone who has mastered the skill. Oftentimes we end up feeling disappointed and disheartened when we place to much expectation on ourselves. If you are someone that struggles to concentrate and control your thoughts like me, practicing a meditation where you focus on nothing will be rather frustrating and difficult. Taking into account your nature you can decide not only what type of mediation but also which senses you would like to stimulate during the process.
How to prepare for a meditation:
- I would highly recommend that you form some kind of routine to ensure consistency, such as completing your meditation before bed / first thing when you wake up
- Having a quiet and undisturbed space will also help you focus and hone in on your own energy, cutting out distractions
- Be reasonable with yourself. If you can only manage two minutes of meditation each day rather be honest with yourself instead of pushing and overwhelming. This way you will be more likely to enjoy the process and continue
- Personalise the experience: figure out what will help you feel calmer and more connected while you meditate by considering these factors: Who i am meditating to? What is the purpose/ goal or intention of this meditation? What tools would be helpful (crystals, sound bowls)? Would I enjoy music or sound during this process? Would meditation beads help me concentrate better?
- Lighting a candle is a great way to set the tone since it is a way to invite spirit forward and it can help you focus if you chose to keep your eyes open you can concentrate on the flame
